Fossil Brachiopods

Brachiopods are a type of shellfish that is now nearly extinct. They were similar to bivalves but have symmetrical shells. Many brachiopods live attached to the sea bottom.. If you find a brachiopod fossil in a rock, what does that tell you about the environment in which the rock formed?
